Delmar Watson began his photo career in 1944 as a Coast Guard photographer. In 1946, he became a news photographer at Acme News Photos (United Press) in Los Angeles. After two years, he joined the Mirror-News where he was a staff photographer for 10 years. In 1958, he entered the commercial photography business with his five brothers.

Since 1967, Watson has had his own photography business in Hollywood. He has photographed nearly every celebrity from 1947 to the 1990s. He has won numerous awards, including two Freedom Foundation Awards, several Associated Press Photo Awards, and a Life Magazine Award in the 1950s.

He has also edited and published five books, including Goin' Hollywood; Quick, Watson, the Camera; Los Angeles, the Olympic City; and Babe, the One and Only.

In March 2002, Delmar Watson received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles.

In May, 2003, the Los Angeles Public Library, Downtown began an exhibition of "100 Years of Hollywood", a selection of rare prints from the Delmar Watson Family Archive.
