When out on a shoot, your camera bag is your lifeline and your mobile storage locker. Over the years, a photographer will learn exactly what is that they personally want and need in their camera bag – usually because they got caught out once and never again. Here are some essentials for you to get started with, so you don’t come short.

The Essential Spares

You can never have enough memory cards! You never know when you are going to be feeling trigger happy and want to snap far more photos than you actually need. Additionally, the bigger the memory cards, the better.

Top tip: try to always empty your memory cards onto your computer, a backup hard drive and the cloud after each photography session. Memory cards and hard drives can crash or get corrupted, and you can lose your content if you leave your pictures on them just kicking about in the bottom of your camera bag.

Extra batteries are also an absolute must for any camera bag. The more, the merrier. You never know where you may end up shooting and you may not have access to a power supply to recharge. If you have three or more spare batteries that are fully charged, you should be able to shoot all day. Just remember to make sure that they are fully charged before you head out.

Cleaning Cloths And Wipes

A dirty lens will immediately kill any photoshoot. Make sure you have at least one soft microfiber cloth to wipe down your lenses. You also get an array of other cleaning wipes and products that you can use. It’s best to try out a few on your camera and see what works best for you. Then, make sure that you have a big enough supply for any dirty or dusty situation.

Fix-It Tools

Like almost every part of the entertainment industry, what goes on behind the scenes on a photoshoot is often less than glamorous. You never know when you might need to MacGyver a stand or prop, or fix something quickly to ensure you can get the best possible shot. Having some duct tape, cable ties, scissors, safety pins and a good multitool in your camera bag will help you to overcome any situation.

Waterproofing

A good waterproof cover for your camera bag will prevent a lot of heartache for you. It’ll allow you to hike through any situation to get the perfect shot, and you’ll know that your gear is safe. When shooting outside, a towel or two is also a good idea. They can be used to shield you and your camera from the elements when you take a break and enjoy the best gaming bets around.

For Your Model

You might not always be lucky enough to work with a full team, including hair and makeup. Just in case, throw in things like a lint roller, makeup remover wipes, hairspray and tissues. You’ll be a lifesaver if you can produce one of these to save the model’s face or clothes when needed.
